A new day a new haiku
Bluebell buds begin
Sometimes springtime sunshine shades
Things I thought I thought
Running from monsters
Crouching in solemn corners
Hiding in darkness
Rocks fill this cold sea
What is this pale emptiness
Lurking inside me
From wrappers and twine
We weave our home into a
Plastic paradise
As snowy squalls scourge
The open plain, our backs brace
Against icy gales
Hammer and anvil
Peen, bite, squash, flatten and shape
To keep the blade sharp
Petals make flowers
Streams combine to make rivers
Together again
Butterflies and bees
Buzz brashly between blossom
Birds bide for berries
Your yellow blossom
Hails the swallows’ arrival
And heralds the spring
Willow leaves break through
Morning sun burns off fresh dew
Beginning anew
Can you catch a flame?
Or capture it in a cage?
Try not to trap time
Squinting in new sun
A rabbit in the headlights
Did we skip a beat?
Suddenly, a fright!
Do I stand my ground and fight
Or turn and take flight?
Sunny sentinels
Synthesising soil and sun
To simple sugars
Duck under holly
Into a dark woodland cave
And wait for morning
These twisted innards
Will not yield to axe or maul
Mallets drive the wedge
Don’t think about it
You’ll end up lost in the woods
Childlike acceptance
Bleeding sap runs clear
My sorrow outweighs your pain
Falling to the ground
Float up and away
Riding gently on thermals
In the deep blue sky
Nothing I create
Will last for a hundred years
Unlike this canal
Empty jaws await
Twist and turn you into lunch
Swallow you up whole
There is great power
In ceaseless repetition
And perseverance
Sap rising sweetly
Purple buds growing quickly
Bark shining brightly
Carry me downstream
In the clear evening shadows
Where do the days go?
