A new day a new haiku
As the first light dawns
New day emerges from grey
Again I’m reborn
Snowdrops reappear
We begin another year
Keep the earth held near
At dawn the stags rut
Beneath a silver wolf moon
I’m captivated
Sharp shards of sunlight
Pierce between furry frost fronds
Open wide my eyes
I have meandered
Into quiet backwaters
Nothing to see here
Buried in the fog
At the bottom of the pile
Turn your face away
Can I see beyond
This rough and ragged hillside?
Stuck in the long grass
Outside freezing fog
Inside a foggy fever
Waiting for the thaw
Solid earth like slate
Lake smooth and hard like a plate
Skate or hibernate?
Hard cold winter light
Brittle branches hold frost bite
Unfolding sharp heights
What mysteries lie
Deep beneath this glassy pool,
Never to be found?
How soon these short days
Turn, vanish and fade away
Only shadows stay
So we head outside
Steely faced we bravely grace
Silent frozen waste
Leaning to your warmth
Rays that stretch into my bones
Great source of all light
In biting cold air
Under drab drizzle grey where
Frozen fingers play
The moss always grows
In the middle of my road
Where nobody goes
Winter’s magma glow
Melting minds that fell behind
When howling winds blow
All I am made of
Has been reclaimed from cold death
By mycelium
And so we begin
Another sunward journey
Let’s go together
Chase the fog away
For hiding here is soul rest
Scattered sunlight graze
These ragged badlands
Forgotten roads lead nowhere
That’s where I settle
When will the fog lift?
When will I get over this?
Time is the best gift
This fungal mirror
Tangled above and beneath
Holds us together
Time won’t skip a beat
Can’t sit still or rest his feet
Don’t try to compete
