A new day a new haiku
Slowly we amble
Meander the river banks
Wander in wonder
The long sun lies down
Low across the fading dale
And calling us home
Nature recycles
Leaves and wood into fungi
Death into beauty
Between capped mineshafts
We crept down the eerie dale
Our captors pursue
Dragged under water
Into seething froth and foam
Sinking in regret
Lashed by wind and rain
Across the cold lonely peaks
The doors all bolted
And now snowdrops spring
Around every new corner
Another surprise
Now ivy surrounds
And pulls you into the ground
Turning upside down
Just a stump remains
You were cut down in your prime
Never to grow back
Whatever we leave
For generations to come
They won’t understand
What mortal terror
Rent these stone walls asunder?
Every kingdom falls
Only this corner
Of your stronghold still standing
You lost the battle
In the place you lay
I trod softly above you
And knelt in wonder
Sitting still for hours
Still I’m moving many miles
Incongruously
I long to paddle
All along this long river
To the Pacific
High rise and inside
Behind misty mountains hide
I go there in mind
Inside concrete shells
Days and nights begin to blur
Slowly float away
Endless mountains stretch
A still silent wilderness
Melting in twilight
The catkins unfurl
Like sheep’s tails swing in the breeze
And birds will come back
High up on a shelf
Folded up into a box
Faded by the light
Irises open
Spicy saffron stamens spring
Where did you come from?
Buried by branches
Blinded by brighter birch bones
Between broken briar
As the first signs spring
They break the cold winter earth
Dreams break hearts in two
Dawn divides darkness
Am I the lies underneath
Or the breaking sky?
