A new day a new haiku
Stranger alchemy
Turns freshly cleft logs, from white
Into burnished gold
You’re more than enough
When you fall, get up again
All that you can be
Through empty pupils
Searching for a safer shore
Carried by currents
Twigs tangle my hair
Dirt invades my fingernails
Weeds entwine my sleeves
Saturated gloom
Drag me deeper underground
Between roots and stones
Riding the thermals
Scan the ground for fresh footprints
Silent hunters prey
Is this a mirror
Or am I disappearing
In gathering mist?
Shrouded in grey clouds
Thoughts turn to the closer things
A distant howl sounds
The sullen grey sky
Mutes gloomy shades of winter
A subtle beauty
Smooth sunshine sparks
Ride ripples on the surface
I resume my work
When the days get cold
Our hearts turn in on themselves
Insulated love
In the mud and fog
I fall, I crawl, a hard slog
In the misty bog
Sometimes I forget
I’m just a vanishing point
In your long shadow
Perpetual fog
Hangs low around our shoulders
Summoning the gloam
Gnarled and twisted limbs
Stoop, droop, stop – and then drop
To where they began
Sentinels still stand
We walk into the cloud line
You draw another
Gentle, graceful owl
Settle down into your roost
Waiting for morning
Which way the road goes
We can never really know
Only a shadow
Run swiftly downstream
Run with me in softer dreams
Run to the pale sea
Now the days are short
Try to rid my head of thoughts
But the wind is fraught
An acre of land
Potential, promise, prospect
Possibility
Even in these bleak
Stone grey solemn winter days
Hints of gold remain
In the mist and snow
At the edge of the abyss
Inescapable
Through discarded leaves
I thread my long white stitches
To feed upon death
