A new day a new haiku
Above the stubble
Soaring silently swooping
Keep my own council
Don’t expect conkers
From a sweeter chestnut tree
Or patience from me
Don’t know where to go
I want to take every road
This is mine alone
The world hurries on
Making progress, going long
I am not enough
High up in the pines
Where the tawny owl’s eyes shine
Find a place to hide
Hide me in the leaves
Tuck me in among the trees
Help me to find peace
September sunshine
Surprising me warm and bright
Our wings’ final stretch
Stack my sunlight store
An animal sanctuary
Tall towers topple
Clear skies, shadows rise
Following the starling cries
To where the cloud lies
Help me build my nest
Help me find a place to rest
Help me try my best
This road never ends
There’s another horizon
You must choose a fork
What draws us to dark
Curious reflections or
The mirror within
Trees cannot be moved
They can only grow upward
Towards the sunlight
From deeper darkness
We reach for enlightenment
A final flame falls
Tangled in brambles
Twist and turn to break the snare
Return to their cover
A chill in the air
Turn our backs on northern skies
Heading further south
This lonely voice stands
Silently calling, unheard
A wavering wind
The wind whips around
Beats me down. I lift my staff
Winnowing the chaff
In my twilight hour
The colours lose their power
Fresh hope can turn sour
Leave me at the edge
Let me hang in the hedges
Washed up on the shore
If I hold my peace
The outcome is no different
To the times I speak
Though I’m made of clay
I’ll decay and rot away
While these pipes remain
Yellowing birch seeds
Tumble back down to the ground
Leaving me behind
I can’t keep waiting
For the skies to become clear
Settle for the clouds
